"El Sotano" is a refuge for homeless street kids in Quito, Ecuador.

It is a place where they can be safe, wash and play, but where they must also do chores and learn to work to help build their self-esteem.

Alan Berner, a staff photographer for the Seattle Times, shot this story for the "Descubriendo Ecuador" project.

A masked, homelesss youngster with a handmade weapon

around his neck, stands before his laundry wash tub.
