In 1994 I spent three weeks recording life
among almost 400 condemned prisoners. There is life on Death Row. After the bloodshed,
after the trial, after the withering sentence, condemned inmates are sent off to
Ellis I, in Huntsville, Texas to wait for their execution.
Texas leads the nation in executions with 92 since 1976, and during the year I photographed
14 men were killed. Over the eight months I worked, I found myself in the oddest
communities, a place where men count the inexorable passage of time both as a victory
and a threat. Some men pass their time doing arts and crafts, building clocks, working
in the death row factory or excercising.
One thing is certain on Texas Death Row, these men will eventually meet their maker
at the hand of the state of Texas.
